Women in the Industry - Rachel Bennett, Part Two

"Everyone has a different story, different motivation, different hustle. We are in a changing world and everyone has the same voice."

Rachel Bennett and her husband Carl started their landscaping business to allow them to work from home with their growing family. Success stories of other landscapers inspired them to found Happy's Lawn Care.

What originally began as a way to support the needs of their growing family has grown into a remarkably profitable company in Western North Carolina!

We've talked to Rachel about her experience of dealing with biased clients, and those who prefer male landscapers over females when dealing with a "difficult" job.

As Rachel proudly stated, doubtful clients only motivate her to work even harder! This incredible passion is shared by Rachel on Happy's Family YouTube channel and as a vocal advocate to the empowerment of women in the industry.

Do you think contributing content on platforms like YouTube can help?

I absolutely believe sharing our stories on platforms will help the movement! Women contributors on YouTube have inspired me to share my own story.

Let's face it, this is not an industry for everyone and is challenging most days. So to love what you do and network and learn from others in your industry is motivating.

What can landscapers do as a community to encourage more women taking up the profession?

I believe if we share stories on social media platforms it will encourage women to become more active in the community. There are a lot more female landscapers then most would like to believe.

I see other women working in this field on a weekly basis, and I also met several at the Green Industry and Equipment (GIE) Expo. As a community, we need to come together and make women feel secure in the knowledge that we know what we're doing and are willing to keep learning.

It would be equally encouraging to women already in the industry, as well as women taking up the profession, for companies and suppliers to gear their marketing and products towards females.

Do you think culture of women-empowering movements of the last few years has impacted the status of female landscapers in the industry?

I'm almost sure it has! Women are empowered and it's deserving. Everyone has a different story, different motivation, different hustle. We are in a changing world and everyone has the same voice.

The more women who share who they are and what they are capable of, the more others will be inspired also!
