How important is Equipment Maintenance to you? During the busy season we do typical maintenance, oil changes. air filters greasing typical stuff like that. During the winter or slow season though how important is it to you to do maintenance? The first thing we like to do is wash all our equipment and then go through them top to bottom and check everything!! When you have a 6-12 thousand dollar machine spark plugs fuel filters and preventative maintenance is cheap.

I would definitely agree with this! Maintaining your equipment is the key to ensure that your company is successful because your equipment is what's bringing in your income. We check all of our equipment regularly and in the off season we make sure to get everything out and running. And as you mentioned, it's better to spend little money now than to spend big money later- if you abuse your equipment and don't take care of them.

I agree with you both, I like to do maintenance at least during winter and when we are slow if we can. We don't want to fix something when we are busy, but stuff does happen and I just got to do with it.

I was a industrial mechanic for 30 years, changing oil is cheapest maintenance you can do to reduce premature engine failure! Engine repairs can be very time consuming labor wise even though most parts are inexpensive. Most of us get sticker shock if a engine needs replace. I'm not a believer of "If its not broke, don't fix it!".

I think maintenance with your tools/equipment is important. One thing I don't think a lot of people think about is keeping up with the maintenance on your hand tools. They may not cost much, but it's still important. This includes shovels, pruners, trimmers, etc. If not properly cared for they could become rusty and dull. Not only is it a hassle, but it can be rough on plants.

I never have thought about maintenance on the small equipment like shovels and rakes. I am always buying new ones every year.

Maintenance is a necessity on any of your equipment to keep it performing at peak operational levels. It results in overall better performance and longevity of your equipment which equates to dollars saved.
