Before you begin, wear safety goggles, gloves, and ear protection. Make sure you're dressed appropriately—avoid loose clothing that could get caught in the trimmer. Inspect your trimmer before starting. Check the blade for any damage and ensure all parts are securely in place.
Use the proper gas-to-oil mixture for your trimmer: a 50:1 ratio. Fill the fuel tank in a well-ventilated area, being careful to avoid spills. Assess the hedge beforehand and decide on the desired height and shape. This helps create a uniform, professional look.
To start the trimmer, press the primer bulb three to five times until fuel is visible. Check the choke lever—open it for warm weather, and close it for cold starts. Pull the starter rope until the engine ignites, then adjust the choke as needed.
Use both hands to grip the trimmer—your dominant hand on the rear handle and the other on the front handle for better control. Begin trimming at the bottom of the hedge and work your way up. This prevents debris from falling onto freshly trimmed areas. Use a sweeping motion and keep the trimmer parallel to the hedge surface for a clean, even cut.
Move the trimmer slowly and steadily. If you encounter thicker branches, apply a little more pressure—but don’t force the blades. For sharp, clean edges, hold the trimmer at a slight angle to make precise cuts and achieve your desired shape.
Once finished, turn off the trimmer and allow it to cool down. Carefully clean the blades with a cloth to remove debris and prevent rust. Store the trimmer in a dry, secure location. At the end of the season, consider emptying the fuel tank to prevent corrosion.
Always be aware of your surroundings—including overhead wires or nearby structures—and keep bystanders, especially children and pets, at a safe distance while operating the trimmer. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to expertly trimming your hedges.
